What is the best way to pack items for storage?
Packing: Plastic tubs with lids and cardboard boxes work great. If using cardboard boxes, fill them to the top, otherwise they could collapse or tip over. But don’t overfill them because that could cause them to break apart. Use appropriate sizes: heavy items should be stored in smaller boxes or plastic containers so they can be easily moved. Stack containers of similar size together for stability. Heavy items should be on the bottom, lighter on top. Books should be packed flat so their spines are protected. Fragile items should be wrapped in packing paper or bubble wrap and stored at the top of your stacks of items. Seal and label all of your containers so you can easily find what you may be looking for.
Stacking: It’s also a good idea to leave some space around your stacks of items to allow for air flow - don’t put your stacks tight together or against the walls. You may even consider elevating the stack on palettes in order to maximize air flow and prevent problems due to humidity. Allowing some space between your stacks can also help with access to your items. Cover exposed items that don’t fit in boxes, like couches, dressers, lamps or beds with inexpensive plastic sheeting or old sheets to protect them.
Are there items I can’t store?
There are several items that can’t be stored - mostly for safety and hygienic reasons. Items that are hazardous, flammable, toxic, chemical, explosive or illegal are not allowed. Neither is food or perishable items because they could attract insects or rodents. Nothing should be stored that is living either - including plants, livestock or pets. Needless to say, you can’t live in a storage unit, either.
Do you provide a lock?
No, you provide your own lock for your unit. You can choose any type you wish - combination or key lock. Locks also come in several different ranges of quality and protection. If you have valuable items inside of your unit, you may not want to secure it with a $3 lock - a better lock, perhaps more in the $15-$20 price range, would better protect your items.
What about insurance for our items?
Talk to your insurance agent about an inexpensive storage unit rental policy. For a small monthly rate, you can be sure your items are covered in the event anything happens. Storage Brothers does not provide any type of insurance.
Inventory: We recommend taking pictures or a video of your items as you move them into your unit. At the very least you should have a written inventory. That way if anything does happen, you know exactly what you had in your unit.
What forms of payment do you take?
We accept checks, money orders or credit card payments, either by paying online or over the phone. Credit card information can also be safely stored online with our secure software and monthly payments can automatically be made each month so you never have to remember to make a payment.
